All of the ingredients and characteristics from Holle Stage PRE are the same as Holle Stage 1.
There is only one difference between these two stages: the source of carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are found in a wide array of both healthy and unhealthy foods such as bread, beans, milk, popcorn, potatoes, cookies, spaghetti, soft drinks, corn, and cherry pie. They also come in a variety of forms. The most common and abundant forms are sugars, fibers, and starches.
To comply with EU legal requirements for energy levels, baby milk formulas use different forms of starch sugars as carbohydrates. The most common forms are lactose and maltodextrin.
Lactose is a sugar composed of galactose and glucose which is found in milk. Lactose makes up around 2–8% of milk, although this amount varies among species and individuals.
Maltodextrin is an affordable starch product (lactose alternative) - a polysaccharide that is produced through the hydrolysis of plants (corn, rice, potato starch, wheat) and used as a bland-tasting filler, thickener and food additive. To make it, first the starches are cooked, and then acids or enzymes are added to break it down further. Organic maltodextrin is made using molecular distillation processes instead of the protein hydrolyzation method and uses only organic plants that have not been genetically modified. Molecular distillation is vacuum distillation below the pressure of 0.01 torr. It is a process of separation, purification and concentration of natural products, complex and thermally sensitive molecules for example vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are many varieties of maltodextrin, depending on the structure present.
Holle has always used organic maltodextrin that has starch-like properties without a sweet taste. The shorter chain length is easier for babies to digest than starch while still serving its purpose of providing energy. Holle wants to avoid having their milk taste too sweet.
Starches, including maltodextrin, release energy slower than sugars. This means that two different baby milks with the same amount of energy per serving can release that energy at different rates. Holle uses a organic maltodextrin that is absorbed slower, it settles in the small intestines, which means that their formula can make a baby feel satisfied for longer. Maltodextrin is mostly used in higher stages for this reason. As the child is developing and growing, they will need to be fed more frequently and so maltodextrin keeps the child full and satisfied with sufficient carbs.
Most parents prefer to opt-out of organic maltodextrin for only organic lactose (since the organic lactose is natural from the cow milk). This makes the most sense for parents that desire the most simple ingredients. There has also been research that links maltodextrin to 38% less absorption but nothing to be alarmed or concerned about as this is expected with maltodextrin.
It is important to weigh the pros and cons about lactose over maltodextrin. Lactose is natural, sweeter and more expensive but has a higher absorption rate so feeding is more frequently while maltodextrin is released over a longer period of time resulting in feeding less frequently and more affordable as an alternative.
